Background

Martin George started Hanwood running club about 10 years ago when a Governor for Hanwood Primary school. The original idea was to train up a group of parents and then all take part in the Great North Run half marathon as a fund raising effort for the school.

Once we had achieved our aim the group of parents decided they wanted to carry on training and we slowly introduced new members to the club. Although it is a running club we are very informal and have a very wide age and ability range, some members not yet teenagers and others rapidly approaching their twilight years. Our club has always been purely about getting people out in the fresh air and getting exercise. We have never had club fees and have acquired a reputation for being a very friendly and welcoming group of people.

One of our original members (all those years ago) couldn't manage to run (well jog, well a very slow jog actually) more than about 400 metres, but within a few years was running regular half marathons and occasional marathons.

We have occasional nights out, which usually involve a few drinks and a meal, which was at The Armoury for our last night out at Christmas.

We are always open to new members from Hanwood or from further afield. Friends and family of current members have joined over the years even though they live in places like Pontesbury, Shrewsbury and Newport.

We like to think we are a good advert for Hanwood.
