Hanwood United — Club History 1890 to Present

The first football team recorded in Hanwood, The Rovers, was formed in 1890 and with a few short breaks for various reasons a team has been in existence to the present time under several different names, with the current Hanwood United being formed after the last of the breaks in 1965.

The Village has been renowned in local football circles for most of their existence winning many cups throughout Shropshire.

During the Second World War, Hanwood Miners Welfare defeated a strong I.T.0 team from nearby Copthorne Barracks 3 — 0 with the opposition containing mostly 'army professionals' including Midlands Legends Johnny Hancocks and Billy Wright of the Wolves and Billy Richardson of the Albion.

As Hanwood Athletic, the Shropshire Junior Cup, then second only in status to the Senior Cup was won in 1948, 1950 and 1952, they were also runners up in the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1949 losing to Llay Welfare at The Racecourse, Wrexham in front of a crowd of 6,859, with home games on route to the final drawing over 1,000 people on two occasions. After their reformation in 1965 the team had to wait until 1972 before winning their first trophy the West Shropshire League Cup, but since then a further 39 successes have followed, together with 28 runners up awards. This period saw a further Shropshire Junior Cup win in 1980, three successive Shropshire Alliance League titles in 1985, 1986 and 1987, the prestigious Commander Ethelston Cup in 1995, County League Premier titles in 2006,2007, 2008 and the West Midlands Division 2 Championship in 2009 together with many local cups county wide. Hanwood U'17s won the Shropshire U18 RA Cup in 2008.

The last two seasons have seen us finish 3rd and 5th in this league and this year we will be looking to do better than this.
